Watch This GoPro Survive a Dip in Molten Lava

Erik Storm, who owns a visitor chosen Kilauea EcoGuides in Hawaii, was leading a private volcano hike last year when he placed his GoPro Hero4 into a crack to film lava flows. But as Tempest became engrossed telling his guests a story well-nigh the Polynesian goddess Pele, hot lava engulfed his GoPro.
Storm thought his camera was a goner, just it turns out the little GoPro, which was sporting a waterproof case at the fourth dimension of the incident, was a lot more than durable than 1 might remember. "From a scientific perspective it virtually likely survived due to the Leidenfrost Effect," Storm wrote in the YouTube video'southward description. The tour guide used a geologist rock hammer to get his GoPro out of the cooling lava, then took it domicile and chipped away all the hardened rock.
"When I got habitation I hammered all the hardened stone off of the photographic camera and was amazed to see the blue wi-fi light still blinking!" he wrote. "The camera would plow on but the lens was slightly melted making it not really useable anymore. The SD bill of fare popped correct out and the footage was intact!"
Storm shared the video and some images of his melted GoPro with PetaPixel and the story has since gone viral. Some have questioned whether Storm did this intentionally, merely he said that's "definitely not the example."
"I am past no ways rich, why would I put a $400 camera in jeopardy intentionally?" he wrote.
